Having an interest in photography, he and his wife, enrolled in classes at the local community college . The classes became more like a club with instructor, Lenny Cook. Class members would get together to plan assignments and expeditions to practice photographic skills. Meetings were held to view images and offer critiques. It was a fun way to learn. When John and Peggy became parents, they had "perfect" subjects to practice photography with and they filled up numerous photo albums. When his children began to participate in sports, John began photographing the ball teams and cheerleaders for the local Optimist Club. A part time business was started. With the profits, John was able to buy more photographic equipment and begin other types of photography.
With a passion for photography and the desire to create the best images possible, John continues to study and master new photography techniques. He was fortunate to have participated in a course taught by internationally known wedding and portrait photographer, Monte Zucker before his death. His style of classical and timeless portraiture has been a great influence on John's work. John is an active member of the Professional Photographers of North Carolina, Professional Photographers of America, and the Southeastern Professional Photographers Association.
